Purpose: To evaluate the effect of prophylactic alpha adrenergic antagonist medication in reducing the acute urinary retention in patients undergoing inguinal herniorraphy with spinal anesthesia.
Materials and Methods: The efficacy of tamsulosin in preventing acute urinary retention after elective inguinal herniorraphy was investigated in 118 patients from January 2007 to March 2008 prospectively. Patients were randomized into two groups. Patients in controlled group were given placebo orally 12 hours before surgery, 12 and 24 hours after surgery. In experimental group, 0.2mg of tamsulosin was given in the same manner of placebo.
Results: Two of 58 patients (3.44%) in the tamsulosin group and 8 of 60 patients (13.33%) in the placebo group developed acute urinary retention (p£¼0.05).
Conclusions: Prophylactic use of tamsulosin after inguinal herniorrhaphy with spinal anesthesia significantly reduced the incidence of acute urinary retention and improved maximal urine flow rate after treatment.
